My first reaction to Utopia was something along the lines of , "Holy mother of all that is made of Awesome!!!111"

And that really just stands. I let it rest.

The first time I watched it, it was while I was at work on the night shift in a hospital, 1am in the lounge with several other tolerant nurses who allowed me to change the channel and turn up the sound and sit almost directly in front of the TV. By the middle, all were laughing with the interaction between the three. During commercial breaks I gave them the short version of Doctor Who 101 so it would make a little more sense. All in all I don't think they were totally miserable. I've already converted one nurse and her entire family (they'll be finishing S2 this week and the five year old girl has already been warned that Rose is leaving but I still think she may need to be restrained by the end of Doomsday! Luckily she did finally get used to Ten and utterly prefers him now...I wish she were mine--she's already a total fangirl!)

I have waited so long to hear Jack and Ten discuss the events of PotW, to have the Doctor finally have someone to talk to so that he could tell Rose's story to someone who really cared. I could watch that scene daily, I believe.

I was just delighted to hear Nine's snark come out through Ten's cheek--it was a dream come true. All that "Oh, stop it!" Gawd I laughed!

The familiarity and warmth and mutual exasperation between Jack and Ten made me all fluttery inside--[livejournal.com profile] dw_slash here I come....

And then to see the whole of the Doctor's personality shine through--the depth of his anguish and age, the truth of his self-centered desperation at being (or not) the Last--when first Martha tells him of the fob watch, and then as the Master taunts him...::shivers::

The anguish! Tennant just does it so well. My review isn't doing this any justice, but he was able to channel all the other doctors so that it wasn't just the tenth incarnation being tortured by the knowledge that "Yay!" he's not the last, but "Holy Fuck!" why'd it have to be that one out of all the bloody Time Lords in the history of everything?!?

And then the apology. My knees would have buckled had I not been seated. It was heartfelt and yet brimming with the Master's favourite flavour of humiliation. And it still did no good at all.

Oh--and the bloody fob watch!! Can I just hug all the DW fans and the entire Internet because that was one spoiler that never reached me? I knew Professor Yana was meant to be the Master but I couldn't figure out at all why the Doctor couldn't sense him...or why the Professor didn't seem to have any clue at all--he was completely genuine! I never would have guessed it in a million bazillion years. I just spent the first half wishing and hoping that the explanation would be plausible and it was so much more than that! I feel like the entirety of the fandom was holding that bit back to spare me and I really appreciate it. Warmed my heart, it did!

I have to say though, as an addendum, that as much as I do indeed like Martha (against my will, mind you) I am really, really, tired of the whole teary-eyed simpering maiden act! It was the same bit of tripe that made me hate Tia Dalma in POTC3. She needs to swallow those unshed tears and man-up a bit. Of course, Jack's unshed tears are charming and touching--but if they were to be nigh ever-present then they, too would get old...

Meanwhile why did it have to get so good right before the end of the series? Only 2 episodes left? I might just start simpering myself.
